Page Prize

The Darla Moore School of Business is proud to announce the winners of the 2013 Dr. Alfred N. and Lynn Manos Page Prize for Sustainability Issues in Business Curricula. Now in its seventh year, the competition is designed to encourage and support efforts to introduce or substantially upgrade sustainability courses and/or associated coursework into the curriculum of business schools, both nationally and internationally.

The Moore School’s approach to sustainability fosters understanding of the sustainable enterprise across three dimensions: the natural environment, good governance and ethics and the value exchange between firms and their counterparts in governments and civil society. The school is helping business and government entities face today's sustainability challenges.

This year's call for syllabi/curricula resulted in receipt of numerous outstanding applications covering a wide range of disciplines including accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, international business, management, marketing, operations and supply chain management and organizational behavior. A database of winning curricula/syllabi is available on the Moore School website for use by business faculty around the world.

Grand Prize winners receive $1,000 and a framed print of Aegean Sea #6, an original diptych by Lynn Manos Page, certifying the award. Honorable Mention prizes will also be awarded at levels of $250 each. Each finalist will receive a print of Aegean Sea #6. The submission deadline for the 2014 Page Prize will be in January of 2015.

    The curriculum at Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business integrates a focus on sustainability strategies with the College’s core strengths of technology, innovation, and management.  The College’s multi-faceted approach creates cross-cutting exposure to sustainability for all levels of students and depth of interest.  Students seeking more depth can immerse themselves in courses and modules dedicated to the fundamentals of sustainability in a business context at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The College also integrates sustainability into traditional business courses, explores design thinking and innovation as they relate to sustainability, offers course-based, sustainability-related consulting projects with industry clients, and actively engages in career education and development activities, resulting in opportunities fit for all students, including those studying in other Colleges at Georgia Tech.

    Sustainable Venturing

    Focused on entrepreneurial opportunities in the transition to a sustainable economy, the course provides students with an understanding of how entrepreneurs can help resolve social and environmental problems.  It embraces a market systems approach to explain the economic drivers of global sustainability challenges, and envision strategic and institutional solutions. 

    The course offers practical knowledge on sustainable business creation, from environmental marketing to implementation and financing of the sustainable venture.  The course also examines specific ventures and sectors that are pioneering the way to more sustainable business models.  Finally, students have the opportunity to develop their own sustainable ventures as part of the course curriculum.  Pedagogically, the course attempts to combine cutting edge knowledge of sustainable business with experiential learning and practical application.  The course uses a variety of in-class exercises, assignments, discussions and readings, including the author’s recent textbook titled, "Sustainable Venturing.”

        Course: “Corporations and Society”
          The Corporations and Society course educates Ivey students about environmental and social issues in business, and reflects a central component of Ivey’s educational mission, which is “to develop business leaders who think globally, act strategically, and contribute to the societies within which they operate”. The course provides students with frameworks and tools to help integrate more environmentally- and socially-responsible decision-making into business strategy. A unique characteristic of the course is that it adopts a hybrid core-elective structure, affording students a choice in the specific version of the Corporations and Society section selected. There are two modules, each consisting of ten sessions: the first, which has a common core curriculum across all Corporations and Society designated courses, examines business impacts in the context of the natural environment and the social environment. The content of the second module, which is elective, varies according to the specific instructor and focuses in detail on a particular subset of issues covered in the first module. Topics of these second modules include business strategy and sustainability, business and government, environmental supply chain management, and women in management. The combination of the two modules provides students with both breadth and depth in educational content.
