Arabic

Doing business in the Arab Region is fast becoming of increasing importance to many global companies. Its diverse business climate is a complex mix of political, cultural and economic factors that requires knowledge beyond that gained in a classroom. Recognizing this trend, the Darla Moore School of Business offers a three year Arabic Track for its IMBA students. Students engaged in this track learn and work in this emerging economic region, gaining direct international experience with the Arab culture and its business world through four phases:

Phase 1. International Core Business Curriculum

Timeline: Year 1, July - December
Location: Columbia, South Carolina

Arabic Track students start their program in early July on the USC campus, joining students from other tracks to begin a six-month, lock-step international business core. The international business core builds a fundamental knowledge base in the functional areas of business with courses that are fast-paced, intensive, team oriented and have a strong emphasis on global issues. Sample courses include:

• Globalization and Corporate Responsibility
• Decision Analysis
• Operations Management
• Global Marketing Management
• Financial Accounting in the Global Environment
• Global Strategic Management
• Global Leadership and Ethics
• Global Entrepreneurship

phase 2. In-Country language study abroad training

Timeline: Year 1-2, January - December
Location: The Arab Language Institute in Fez, Morocco

Located in the medieval city of Fez, Morocco, the Arab Language Institute in Fez will provide the first of two blocks of in-country language training for Arabic track students. Language teachers from this institution are native speakers who provide both Arabic language instruction and cultural sensitivities. This set of language is focused on the Arabic MSA block – or the Modern Standard Arabic basic language constructs. The second setting of language instruction will include additional Arabic language instruction at an Arabic-speaking institution selected by the Moore School of Business. Typically, this stage of language training is focused on a regional dialect of Arabic, such as Gulf Arabic. We are constantly establishing new partnerships and reviewing our current language institutional partnerships in order to reflect the highest academic standards. Clearly, we will also take into consideration the current political and security environment in the area before an institution is selected.

phase 3. Global Internship

Timeline: Year 2-3, January-August
Location: TBD

The internship availability period typically begins immediately after students complete their in-country language training. Students pursue internships, with guidance from the Moore School, that are structured assignments within large or small corporations, multi-lateral organizations or not-for-profit institutions lasting up to seven months. The internship will ideally take place in an Arabic-speaking country and will encompass tasks that are based on the functional area of interest of the student, i.e., finance, marketing, etc.

phase 4. Business Specialization curriculum

Timeline: Year 3, August - May
Location: Columbia, South Carolina

Upon completion of the internship, IMBA students return to USC to focus on their business specialization courses during their final fall and spring semesters. During this phase, students develop functional expertise in an available concentration such as:

• Entrepreneurship
• Finance
• Economic Development
• Marketing
• Global Management
• Human Resources
• Supply Chain and Operations Management
• Information Systems

Phase 5: International Business School Exchange (optional)

Timeline: Year 3, August - May
Location: Columbia, South Carolina

There is also the opportunity for qualified students to further deepen their international experience by opting to take one of their final semesters at a business school where the Moore School has established an IMBA exchange agreement. IMBA electives are offered at leading exchange partner universities around the world. For a current list of these schools and full details of the program, see the Moore School's Business School Exchange Programs.
