Biography
William Phillips is an associate professor of economics in the University of South
Carolina Moore School of Business. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from MIT in 1980,
specializing in Economic History and International Trade. Since that time, Dr. Phillips has taught
at USC, and won the business school's A.G. Smith Teaching Award in 1983. He was a finalist for the
University of South Carolina Amoco Teaching Award in 1989, and taught regularly in the MIBS program
until 1992. In 1993, he was named Director of the Undergraduate Economics Program at USC, and now
primarily teaches upper-level courses for Economics majors. His research has concentrated on
British and American economic history, with publications in the
Journal of Economic History, the journal of the Economic History Association. Since 1989,
he has been studying patents issued in the 19th century by the U.S. Patent Office to inventors
living in the American South.
