International Business Major

General Information and Application 2008

The international business major is designed to develop graduates who will eventually enter into leadership positions in international business and society. Enrollment in the program is capped, so admission to the major is very competitive. Even highly capable students cannot be guaranteed admittance into the IB program. The Undergraduate International Business major requires a second major chosen from existing majors offered by the Moore School of Business.

The program of study includes:

  1. Five undergraduate International Business courses;
  2. Four advanced courses (300 level or above) in one of the following languages: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, or other approved language;
  3. At least one study period outside the United States;
  4. A second major in another business discipline to be chosen from accounting, economics, finance, insurance and risk management, management, management science, marketing, or real estate.

The completed application must be received in the Undergraduate Division, Room 201, Moore School of Business by 5:00 p.m. on February 9th, 2009. Students will be notified of admission decisions prior to advisement in the spring or no later than March 31th, 2009.

A full description of the admissions procedure and criteria are available online and can be downloaded in Word format.

Important points to note in completing the application are:

  1. Students must be currently enrolled in, or candidates for admission to, the Moore School of Business.
  2. Students must have earned a minimum of 45 semester hours of college credit.
  3. Students must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher on all courses taken for college credit.
  4. Students must have completed, or demonstrate that they will complete prior to the Fall Semester for which they are applying, the following required business core courses: ECON 221, ECON 222, ACCT 225, ACCT 226, MGSC 290, and MGSC 291.
  5. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated ability in foreign language to include basic proficiency in the selected language at the time of application. It is recommended that the 200 level of the foreign language be completed during the sophomore year in order to complete the four required 300 level courses. Some language tracks may be limited depending on demand. Students who have studied and plan to continue to study in languages designated as "less-commonly taught languages" (such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian), may receive preference.

Acceptance of a student into the program is conditioned on completion of the six courses identified above before the Fall Semester for which they are applying. Acceptance of a student is also conditional on enrolling in the required core course of the major, IBUS 310, in their first Fall Semester in the program.
