Required Health Insurance Coverage and Immunization

Required Health Insurance Coverage

Effective Fall 2004, graduate students enrolled in nine (9) or more hours and all international students are required to have health insurance coverage as a condition of enrollment. It is fully recognized that requiring health insurance coverage creates an additional financial burden for students; however, insurance has always been a requirement when traveling overseas for the internship portion of the program and for international students as well as for the year of overseas langauge study for three-year track students. Insurance coverage must now be for the entire length of the program of study.

The USC policy is adminstered under a hard-waiver program. Students will be enrolled in the University insurance plan unless they present evidence of alternative coverage to the Health Insurance Assistance Office of Thomson Student Health Services. The hard-waiver proof must be submitted each semester the student is enrolled. It is recommended that, as a minimum, alternative insurance plans provide coverages and benefits similar to the University-sponsored plan. To view the University-sponsored plan go to: http://www.sa.sc.edu/tshc/tshc.htm .

If you are an international student, please go to this URL for additional information about your health insurance requirements:  http://www.sa.sc.edu/tshc/index.htm
