Program Progression
First Year
The Ph.D. coordinator, in consultation with the student, will recommend course work for the student’s first year in the program. During this year, the Ph.D. coordinator, in consultation with the Program Director and the student, will assign an advisory committee for the student. The committee will determine a program of study, consisting of a list of proposed courses to fulfill the requirements described above. The program of study should be filed with the graduate office of the Moore School of Business.
Second Year
No later than the end of their third semester in the program, the students will stand for a written qualifying examination (Admission to Candidacy Examination). The content of this examination will be based on course work already taken in the program. Details are specified in “Ph.D. Program Rules, Policies, and Procedures” for the Management Area.
Third Year
Upon completion of all required courses, a student will stand for a comprehensive examination. This normally takes place during the sixth semester in the Ph.D. program. This examination will consist of a written part followed by an oral part. The oral part must be taken within three weeks of successfully completing the written examination. The examination may not be taken more than twice. Details are specified in “Ph.D. Program Rules, Policies, and Procedures” for the Management Area.
After successfully completing the comprehensive examination, the student forms a dissertation committee. The committee must consist of no fewer than four members, as prescribed by The Graduate School. The advisory committee ceases to function at that time and the dissertation committee assumes all advisement function for the student.
Fourth Year
Under the direction of the dissertation committee,
the student completes and defends a dissertation that gives evidence of original and significant
research.
