Biography
Robert E. Markland is Associate Dean for Administration and Professor of Management Science in the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, where he is also the Executive Director of the USC-Business Partnership Foundation. He served as Academic Program Director (Department Chair) for Management Science from 1978 to 1995, and as Associate Dean - Academic Affairs and Director of Graduate Studies from 1995 until 2001. The recipient of a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri – Rolla, he received his MBA and DBA from Washington University (St. Louis), where he was a Ford Foundation Fellow.
Dr. Markland's current research activities are in service systems design and measuring the contribution of manufacturing to business performance. The author of more than 100 articles and proceedings papers, he has published in journals such as Management Science, Operational Research Quarterly, Decision Sciences, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Research, Naval Research Logistics Quarterly, Interfaces, Production and Operations Management, and the Journal of Operations Management. His research has won awards at regional, national, and international professional society meetings and journals. He authored the third edition of a textbook entitled Topics in Management Science (John Wiley & Sons, 1989), co-authored the textbook Quantitative Methods – Applications to Managerial Decision Making (John Wiley & Sons, 1987), and co-authored the second edition of a textbook entitled Operations Management: Concepts in Manufacturing and Services (South-Western College Publishing, 1998).
He has served as a consultant to the Ralston Purina Company, the RAND Corporation, the Diebold Group, Williams Pipeline Company, Milliken Corporation, the National Technological University, and several large banks. A member of INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences), the Decision Sciences Institute, and the Production and Operations Management Society, he served as the Editor of Decision Sciences from 1984 to 1989. He was elected a distinguished Fellow in 1980 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 1985, both by the Decision Sciences Institute. He was President of the Decision Sciences Institute from 1991 to 1992, was Vice President – Publications of The Institute of Management Sciences from 1991 to 1994, and currently serves on seven editorial boards. His listings include American Men of Science, Who's Who in Education, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
A recipient of an AMOCO Foundation Excellence of Teaching Award at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, 1975), he was awarded the "Best All-Around Professor Award" by the 1982 USC - MBA class, and the Alfred G. Smith Excellence in Teaching Award by the USC College of Business Administration in 1983. He was selected as a USC-Business Partnership Foundation Fellow for 1980-88, a USC-Business Partnership Foundation Distinguished Fellow for 1988-2003, and was named as the James C. Self Distinguished Faculty Fellow for 1990-2003
Dr. Markland has also taught at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, Washington University, and Arizona State University. While at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, he served as Associate Dean - Graduate Studies from 1977 to 1978 and Management Science Area Coordinator from 1972 to 1976. He has presented numerous seminars and lectures to business and academic audiences throughout the United States and in foreign countries, including Australia, Austria, England, France, Denmark, Greece, The Netherlands, the People' Republic of China, Korea, Belgium, Mexico, and Japan.
