Biography
Phil Marshall is a full-time lecturer in information technology, program coordinator for the initial business information systems and office automation course, and undergraduate management information systems concentration advisor. Mr. Marshall holds a B.S. in Business Administration from The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina, an M.A. in Computer Resource Management from Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri and is a graduate of Air Command and Staff College, Montgomery, Alabama. He has twenty-five years experience in information systems as a systems analyst, project manager, training director and information technology instructor. He currently teaches and coordinates the initial Computer Information Systems in Business undergraduate course at the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business. Phil assists the department chair and the Management Information Systems (MIS) staff in designing the MIS curriculum. He assists individual students seeking information systems careers to plan their graduation strategy. He briefs the Undergraduate Advisement staff on information technology trends and MIS curriculum modifications.
Mr. Marshall's research interests include business job skills and pay expectations for graduates locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; office automation trends in business; relational database implementations; structured systems analysis and design; database-driven Web site design; programming logic for non-programming business professionals; and MIS curriculum design.
Mr. Marshall received the Chairman's Award from UNUM-Provident Corporation in 1998 for designing and implementing a corporate-wide, week-long training program for all employees and a programmer training course for converting functional employees to programmers. He currently serves on the SC Technical College Information Technology Advisory Board, Lexington (County) Technology Center Information Technology Advisory Board, McGraw-Hill Information Technology Panel, Prentice-Hall Information Technology Council, and Leadership Education Adult Program (LEAP) Curriculum Advisory Committee. He serves on the review panel for information technology topics at McGraw-Hill, Prentice-Hall and Harcourt. He is the co-author of IT Today, McGraw-Hill, 2000, and he compiled MGSC 190 Applications Text, McGraw-Hill, for USC students in 2000 and 2001.
Mr. Marshall has been a controller in manufacturing and the US Air Force. He has given national lectures in MIS Project Management, Structured Systems Analysis and Design, and Relational Database Concepts to Mobil, Kodak, US Army, Social Security Administration, McDonnell-Douglass and Information Technology Department at the University of Texas at Austin. On active duty, he was given a field promotion to squadron commander in southeast Asia during the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War. He briefed all aircraft carrier pilots and weapons controllers entering Southeast Asia on aerial combat techniques and procedures. He was commander of the first national guard unit activated for Desert Shield/Storm. He received the Meritorious Service Medal for coordinating air tactical control and directing the automation of National Guard Headquarters. He received the USAF Chaplain's Commendation for Sunday School programs in North Dakota. He served on NATO Battle Staff and was primary arms negotiator for Norway and Denmark. He served in North Dakota, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, Norway, Denmark, Italy, and England. He retired as a Colonel from the Georgia Air National Guard. He continues to work with young people outside the classroom as a USAF Academy Liaison Officer and SC Department of Juvenile Justice Volunteer.
