Costs and Expenses


The Ph.D. in Business Administration and the Ph.D. in Economics are tuition-based programs.

Funding Package:
Most Ph.D. students have a research or teaching assistantship along with a 100% tuition supplement to help defray expenses.  More information is available on Graduate Assistantships.   

Living Expenses:
Costs listed below are estimates for one calendar year:

Housing: $5,000 Estimate is based on one student sharing a two bedroom apartment with one other person for  one calendar year. 

Books: $800
Estimate is based on supplies for one year.

Food : $3,000
Students may choose to purchase a prepaid meal plan to eat at University dining facilities.  The full-meal plan (21 meals per week) costs $2,100 per academic year.  For students living on or off campus, estimated expenses for one calendar year are $3,000.

Student Health Insurance: $1,000
All international students are required to provide proof of health insurance each semester.

Dependent Family Members:
For students who will be accompanied by family, the estimated costs to support these dependents for one year are $2,500 for the spouse and $1,000 for each child.

Personal Expenses: $2,000
These expenses include routine medical and dental costs, clothes, laundry, transportation, recreation, and personal expenses.

Total Living Expenses: $11,800

Additional Fees:
Enrollment Fee: International students enrolling at USC must pay a one-time enrollment fee of $500.  This fee is usually assessed during the first semester and is automatically added to your bill.

Matriculation Fees:
A one-time, nonrefundable matriculation fee of $50 is assessed to all degree seeking students.

Technology Fee:
$200 per semester ($17 per credit hour).
