Sonoco International Business Department

Faculty and Research

This is one of the few stand-alone international business departments in the country, a position it has maintained since its founding in 1976. The department was recently endowed by Sonoco Products Company with a $3 million gift and is now named the Sonoco International Business Department. The department provides the Moore School with unparalleled expertise in the critical area of conducting business across national borders and diverse cultures. Through research and pedagogy, we provide a better understanding of the cross-border internal and external organizational relationships and processes in the modern multinational enterprise (MNE), as well as of the institutional, financial, socio-cultural, and socio-political contexts within which MNEs are embedded. While we share this common interest, we approach these issues from a variety of disciplinary traditions, including sociology, economics, psychology, and political science, as well as business functional perspectives. Thus, the department builds on this diversity to study international business phenomena from multidisciplinary and multilevel perspectives. Throughout this publication, you can see just a few examples of these meaningful research collaborations.

In addition to the top-ranked international business major at the undergraduate level, we offer a highly regarded international business major at the doctoral level. We contribute significantly to the international master’s and executive programs at the Moore School. The department’s commitment to excellence in the classroom is evidenced by numerous outstanding teacher awards at all levels, as well as by the highly regarded Faculty Development in International Business program, which we have been offering to colleagues from other universities for almost two decades.

As a department, our scholarly contributions to the field of international business have been consistently recognized at the highest level. Studies published in the Journal of International Business Studies rank the University of South Carolina as #1 in research productivity as well as #1 in “impact factor-based editorial board” membership. Furthermore, recent studies in International Business Review rank the University of South Carolina in the top five universities worldwide for the total number of articles published in leading international business journals during the period 1995-2004. As a department, we have an enduring commitment to scholarship and excellence.
