New York financier and University of South
Carolina alumna Darla Moore, who in 1998 contributed $25 million to the business school that now
bears her name, donated another $45 million to the Moore School of Business on April 23, 2004.
"The newest gift," said Dean Joe A. Smith III, "marked the moment when the Moore School's pursuit of excellence turned into the pursuit of greatness."
USC President Andrew Sorensen called the latest gift "a validation of the strength and potential of the Moore School."
The two gifts combined make the $70 million contribution one of the largest private donatiions ever made to a u.S. business school by a single individual. The latest donation is a matching gift that requires the Moore School to rais additional money. USC will provide $15 million in public funds. The University and the Moore School will raise at least $30 million more in private funds.
"The business school is an integral part of the future of South Carolina," said Moore. "If our students are prepared with state-of-the-art training and a rigorous educational environment, they can add fuel to the economic engine of our state's future, as well as our nation's."
