Well-known golf course designer, Paul "Pete" Dye was honored at the University of South Carolina's spring commencement May 9 with an honorary doctorate in business administration. Dye designed seven courses in South Carolina, including The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island and Harbour Town Golf Links at Hilton Head Island. But he also has ties to the Moore School.
When Dean Hildy Teegen was a mere undergraduate student (at the University of Texas-Austin), she stayed with Pete Dye and his wife, Alice (an amateur golfer and course designer in her own right) at their home in the Dominican Republic while researching free zone industry and sugar’s potential as a fuel source. That experience, Dean Teegen says, "launched my interest in an academic career."
The Dyes’ son, P.B., and daughter-in-law, Jean, are close friends of retired Associate Dean Rod Roenfeldt and his wife, Cindy.
One of the most influential course architects in the world, Dye has designed and built golf courses in 23 states. He is a recipient of the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award and will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame later this year.
