Dr. William T. Moore, Berlinberg Professor of Finance, has completed a study indicating that firms design convertible bonds with future capital investment plans very much in mind. In the study with Timo Korkeamaki (Ph.D. ’01), they find that bonds that may be called shortly after issuance tend to be issued by firms that undertake significant capital expenditures soon after issuing the securities. The study is forthcoming in the Journal of Finance. In another study with Chris McNeil (Ph.D. ’00) to be published in the Journal of Corporate Finance, Moore found that firms tend to experience improvements in investment efficiency after spinning off divisions. And, in a study with Yoon Shin (Ph.D. ’00), Moore found that Japanese rating agencies tend to assign higher ratings to bonds than their U.S. counterparts, and they investigate the reason for the disparity. The study is to be published in the Review of Financial Economics.
