Bearden named USC faculty athletics representative


William O. "Bill" BeardenDr. William O. "Bill" Bearden, Bank of America Chaired Professor of Marketing, has been appointed as Faculty Athletics Representative for USC Athletics. In this capacity, he advises University President Andrew Sorensen on matters related to the athletics programs and works with Dr. Sorensen to determine the university's position on NCAA legislation. Dr. Bearden will review the eligibility, admission, and progress of student-athletes; assist in evaluating compliance with NCAA regulations; and attend SEC and NCAA meetings, serving as the university's voting delegate at the NCAA's annual meeting.

Dr. Bearden, who received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1975, served for six years on the board of directors for the American Marketing Association. He has been president of the academic division of the American Marketing Association and president of the Southern Marketing Association. Dr. Bearden is a recipient of the University of South Carolina Amoco Teaching Award that is presented annually to one faculty member. He has twice been awarded the Alfred G. Smith Teaching Award, the highest teaching award from the Moore School of Business, and is a four-time recipient of the Mortar Board Teaching Award. He is a recipient of the Outstanding MBA Teacher Award, the Michael J. Mungo Undergraduate Teaching Award, a USC Educational Foundation Research Award, and a Carolina Trustee Professorship Award.
