
Dr. Gregory R. Niehaus, a professor of insurance and finance at the Moore
School of Business, is the new associate dean for research and academics. The appointment was
announced by Dr. Hildy Teegen, who took over as Dean of the Moore School on Sept. 15.
"Greg is a highly regarded scholar and teacher and has been a valuable colleague within the School for many years," Teegen said. "I cannot imagine a better partner for providing academic leadership at this critical time in the School's history, and am thrilled to have the chance to work closely with a committed leader of Greg's caliber."
Niehaus received his Ph.D. in economics from Washington University in 1985. He also holds a master's degree in economics from Washington University and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Kenyon College.
Niehaus came to the University of South Carolina as an associate professor of finance and insurance in 1990 after teaching for five years at the University of Michigan. He served as chairman of the school's Department of Banking, Finance, Insurance and Real Estate from 2000 to 2004.
His articles have been published in numerous professional journals, including the
Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance, Journal of Business, Journal of Banking and
Finance, The Accounting Review, Financial Management, Journal of Financial Services Research,
Journal of Risk and Insurance, and the
Financial Analysts Journal. His research interests include corporate finance, the
economics of insurance, corporate pension plans, and corporate risk management.
Niehaus has won several teaching awards, including the Moore School's highest teaching honor,
the Alfred G. Smith, Jr. Award for Teaching Excellence, in 1994.
He has coauthored a textbook, Risk Management and Insurance, with Dr. Scott Harrington, formerly of the Moore School.
