Moore students featured in AP story

Three Army officers enrolled in the Arabic Track of the Moore School’s IMBA program were featured in an AP news story posted at news.yahoo.com, CNN.com, and others February 5.

Major David Hibner, Major Levi Dunton, and Captain George Walter all have combat experience in Iraq, and all agreed that the communication barrier complicated everything from reading road signs to completing rebuilding projects.

“The Army’s experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq have shown it needs people who are able to work in foreign languages and cultures as well as be combat-oriented,” Hibner was quoted as saying.

Their Arabic class is taught by a second-year IMBA student, Phillip Herlein. In late February, the three officers will travel overseas for more intensive training in modern standard Arabic.

The Moore School expects to enroll a second group of officers in the Arabic Track this summer. Language and cultural training of its officers is a new priority of the Army, according to Colonel Mark Patterson, who is in charge of policy for developing the Army officer corps and was also quoted in the article. “We’re trying to develop officers to be strategic thinkers and creative managers…who are culturally aware and have some language capability,” he said.
