Three teams of undergraduate students competed in the Langfan Oratorical competition held
November 20 in Lumpkin Auditorium, 8th floor of the Moore School of Business. Students were
assigned a realistic current business issue– this year's topic was Airline Passengers Bill of
Rights – and were tasked with giving case presentations.
The teams were then judged by experts in the field and awarded prizes. The first-place team
received $1,000 and the Langfan medal. The second-place team was awarded $500, and the third-place
team received $250.

The William and Marion Langfan Constitutional Oratorical Prize was established in 1999 by an
endowment from William K. Langfan. Langfan, an attorney, received his undergraduate degree in
business from the Moore School in 1943. While a student at USC, he was a member of the Euphradian
Society, and won the prestigious Gonzales Medal for Oratorical Debate. Since 2006, the Moore School
has awarded first-place recipients with the Langfan Medal for Oratory Excellence.
The prize reflects Langfan’s belief in the importance of oratory as an educational tool,
especially for lawyers and businesspeople who must think on their feet, and his recognition for the
substance of constitutional law. Langfan has established similar competitions at the Cordoza School
of Law at Yeshiva University, Cornell Law School at Cornell University, and at Horace Mann High
School, a private school in New York.
