Seven Moore School undergraduates studying Global Supply Chain and Operations Management (GSCOM) in
the Management Science department are winners of a new research paper competition. The awards will
be presented Feb. 13 at a dinner sponsored by the Columbia chapter of APICS, the industry
association for operations management professionals.
The semi-annual competition is conducted in the introductory operations management courses,
said Dr. Manoj K. Malhotra, professor and chairman of the Management Science department. The
competition "is a key initiative for encouraging students to recognize the concrete value of GSCOM
careers and competencies," he said.
There were 15 entries in fall 2006 from students taking the Survey of Operations Management
course taught by Drs. Sanjay Ahire and Michael Galbreth.
The first-place winners are
Ken Maeda,
Amber McCarter, and
Karen Wurster, who conducted an analysis of actual
operations of a franchise location for Jazzman's Café in Columbia, South Carolina. The team won
$250 and a one-year APICS student membership for each team member.
Second-place winners are
Jenelle Conaway and
Whitney Jones, who analyzed various approaches to improving
operations in a typical beauty salon. This team won $150 and a one-year APICS student membership
for each team member.
Third place-winners are
Raymond Brown and
Malcolm Jenkins, who highlighted approaches to improve
operations in banks. They received $75 and a one-year APICS student membership for each team
member.
The award-winning entries will be forwarded to the APICS National Undergraduate Research
Paper Award Competition.
The next Moore competition will be conducted this spring.
