Chevron selects Moore student to attend conference

Roy Nygaard, a second-year IMBA student at the Moore School of Business, was selected as one of just seven MBA students from the top U.S. business schools to attend Gastech 2006, the 22nd International Exhibition and Conference for the LNG, LPG and Natural Gas Industries, held in Abu Dhabi from December 4-7, 2006. While this was the 22 second year of the Gastech conference, 2006 marked the first year of their new initiative called "Gastech: Fuelling the Future." The program objective was to invest in outstanding students, introduce them to the liquid and natural gas industries, its key issues and projects, and provide them the opportunity to network with executives from a range of international companies.

Of the 194 U.S. students who applied for the program (including 22 from Moore School), Chevron selected and sponsored all-expense-paid trips for 7 students from top schools including Moore, University of Michigan, Kellogg, Darden and Rice. Like Roy, every U.S student had work experience in the oil or gas industries. In all, 92 students were selected to attend the program representing countries including the United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Spain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Pakistan.

"This was a wonderful experience," said Roy, "I learned so much about the industry and made some great contacts." During the three days the MBA students were at the conference, they attended several receptions. "There wasn't a job-fair aspect, but there was plenty of networking and passive recruiting at the receptions."

The structured portion of Fuelling the Future included lectures by representatives from three companies. Dolphin Power discussed Persian Gulf-area natural gas projects and Oman LNG covered multilateral natural gas projects with the participation of Oman, Qatar and UAE. The Chevron representative presented their natural gas projects and development plans for the Gulf of Mexico.

This year's conference, Gastech 2006, had record-breaking attendance of more than 5,700 individuals from the global gas industry (up 19.4 percent from 2005). This biennial event is attended by top-level executives within the gas industry as well as a range of commercial and technical experts. More than 40 percent of attendees were CEOs, presidents, managing directors or general directors of energy companies from across the globe.
