SHRM student chapter receives Superior Merit Award for 2006-2007

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in Alexandria, Virginia, has awarded the Superior Merit Chapter designation to the Moore School of Business student chapter for an outstanding job of providing opportunities for growth and development to its members.

The Society for Human Resource Management’s student chapters help to advance the human resources profession by demonstrating their knowledge and commitment to the field of human resources. This year's meritorious chapters serve as models of excellence, not only to other SHRM student chapters, but those of other campus-based student organizations," said Chuck Salvetti, SHRM's Student Programs Manager. "All of our merit award chapters should be extremely proud of their accomplishments."

Of 430 active student chapters nationwide, 118 submitted applications for this national award. A total of 103 chapters earned the Superior Merit Award, and 15 chapters achieved Merit Award status. To earn the Superior Merit designation, chapters must receive at least 1,901 out of 3,300 possible points. Merit award is granted to chapters which receive 1,650 to 1,900 points, and honorable mention to chapters earning less than 1,650 points. The USC chapter earned a total of 1,915 points. The SHRM student chapter merit award program, in existence since 1972, recognizes achievements in four broad areas:

The USC chapter will receive a specialized plaque to display at the university, and is being recognized in SHRM's publications and at its conferences.

According to Kristine Foreman, first-year MHR candidate and USC chapter president, "What is most notable about receiving this award this year is that we were completely unfunded.  We had a total of $56 for the entire year and we managed to compete with other chapters with substantially more money to spend!"

The chapter focused on providing low- to no-cost activities to provide professional development to its membership, including a variety of program speakers, and the first-ever “HR Film Series:  Human Resources through the Eyes of Hollywood." Leaders of the SHRM student chapter were also instrumental in planning the first MHR December Hooding event, which will be an annual event at the Moore School.  Other activities included participation in the MLK Day of Service and service to other student organizations such as the Moore School Doctoral Student Association.  More information on the chapter's activities can be found under " Student Organizations" at the Moore School Web site, http://mooreschool.sc.edu.

The Society for Human Resource Management, representing more than 200,000 individual members, is the world's largest association devoted to human resource management.
