Women business students also succeed in sports

A number of Moore School female undergraduates have distinguished themselves outside the halls of academia in sports this spring.

Nine business majors helped their University of South Carolina Equestrian team win their first-ever national title in Varsity Equestrian April 16 at the NCAA championships held in Santa Fe, New Mexico. They include sophomore Jessica Boll, freshman Allison Bradley, sophomore Tara Brothers, junior Ashleigh Collins, sophomore Ellen Hogate, sophomore Carly Johns, junior Emily Krach, freshman Elizabeth Smith, and junior Ashley Williams.

Senior All-American Khalilah Carpenter, a member of the USC’s women’s track team, helped propel her 4x200 relay team to victory at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania April 30. Despite a rainy day, Carpenter, along with teammates Erica Whipple, Stephanie Smith, and Shalonda Solomon, recorded the 10th fastest time in Penn Relay history with 1:31.57.

USC diver and senior business major Holly Hodges was recently named the female athlete recipient of this year’s Southeastern Conference Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. Hodges was a member of the U.S. National Diving Team and an NCAA All-American in 2002; placed second in the three-meter event at the 2002 SEC Championships; and after sitting out 2003 with an injury, again earned a spot in the 2004 NCAA Championships. In addition to her accomplishments on the board, she finishes her undergraduate career with a 3.965 GPA, is a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-America Team, and the recipient of the USC Golden Key International Honor Society Outstanding Academic Achievement Award in 2002. She also managed to find time to volunteer with Special Olympics, the Animal Protection League of South Carolina, Adopt-A-Highway, and Home Works of South Carolina, among others.

Congratulations to these female athlete-scholars!
