Dr. Gregory R. Niehaus, a professor of insurance and finance at the Moore School,
is the new associate dean for research and academics, while
Dr. Scott Koerwer from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of
Maryland has been named deputy dean, a newly created position at the Moore School.
Teegen herself took over as dean on Sept. 15, succeeding Joel A. Smith III, who has retired.
Niehaus came to USC in 1990 after teaching for five years at the University of Michigan. He
served as chairman of the school's Banking, Finance, Insurance and Real Estate department from 2000
to 2004.
"Greg is a highly regarded scholar and teacher and has been a valuable colleague within the
school for many years," Teegen said. "I cannot imagine a better partner for providing academic
leadership at this critical time in the school's history, and I am thrilled to have the chance to
work closely with a committed leader of Greg's caliber."
Niehaus received his Ph.D. in economics from Washington University in 1985. He has won
several teaching awards, including the Moore School’s highest teaching honor, the Alfred G. Smith,
Jr. Award for Teaching Excellence, in 1994. His articles have been published in numerous
professional journals, and he has coauthored a textbook,
Risk Management and Insurance.
Scott Koerwer, currently associate dean of professional programs and services at the
University of Maryland's business school, will join the Moore School on Nov. 1. As deputy
dean, his responsibilities will include internal operations and external affairs.
"Scott's extensive background in higher education administration and his track record of
outstanding leadership at two of this country's best business schools (Smith and Wharton) will
provide us with critical insights and expertise as we work to implement our strategies and fulfill
our mission." Teegen said.
Koerwer has been associate dean at the Smith School since April 2001, working across
departments and functions. He served as chief marketing and communications officer, co-director of
the school's Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), and executive
director of the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship. Koerwer also headed the school's Office of
Executive Education, Office of Career Management, Executive MBA Programs, the MBA and MS Programs,
and the part-time MBA Program.
At the Smith School, he was involved in education and business program development in
countries in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Before joining the Smith School, Koerwer held a variety of positions during his nine-year
affiliation with the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. An entrepreneur in the
education industry, he launched three companies and worked as a consultant to numerous companies,
entrepreneurial initiatives, and educational enterprises.
Koerwer holds a doctorate in education from the University of Pennsylvania. He is an alumnus
of the Kellogg School of Management's Advanced Executive Program, and also earned a two-year
certificate in organizational development and consulting from the National Training Labs.
