UP TO 80% OF ALL JOBS NEVER GET ADVERTISED.  So, developing relationships with professionals in your field is key to a successful job search.

It's never too early to take advantage of any opportunity to make connections that will help you tap into the hidden market.  Even if you already have contacts through your personal network, we suggest the following actions:

• Job Fairs - participating even if you are not job searching
• Employer Information Sessions - attending these Career Center-sponsored events, and
• Student Organizations - joining those that regularly host professional speakers at their meetings.

Also consider joining professional associations relevant to your major or career interests that offer student memberships.  For details on several associations that offer job listings, networking contacts, and information on the current job market to student members, check out the listings for your major on our Business Links page.

PROFESSIONALISM

Long before you enter the world of work, you must begin developing your professional identity.  The following resources will assist you in making a smooth transition from college to career:

Career Center Library - The Career Center Library also has valuable information for students regarding professionalism and common issues in the workplace.  (Click on "Transition to world of work" in the category field.)  Hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.  Visit during On Call Hours (M-F, 1-4 pm) for a staff member to assist you.
