How is this program unique and different from the many band camps that are available? 

This program centers around individual and chamber music performance. There is a strong emphasis on private lessons and solo performances, along with classes in theory, history and improvisation. There are a minimum of two hours each day of practice time in each student’s schedule in order to maximize the personal musical growth of each student. 

How many private lessons will a student have?
Each student receives a minimum of five 30-minute lessons. (One per day, Monday through Friday)

How is playing in a chamber group different than playing in a band or orchestra?
Chamber music pieces are all one to a part; each person plays an independent part without a conductor.  Some of the important things students learn are issues of balance (being sure the important parts are always heard), intonation and dynamics. For many students, this is their first time playing chamber music, and they will learn how to stop and start independently.

Will I be able to get a recording of my performances?
Yes, the USC School of Music recording engineer, Jeff Francis, records all CSMC recitals; and they’re available for purchase to each student at the end of the program.

Do I need to complete an audition?
Applicants must submit 2-3 contrasting pieces during the registration process.  Please see the Voice Intensive page and the Jazz Intensive page for the intensive program audition requirements.
