Oboe studio

The oboe studio at the University of South Carolina is dedicated to training the next generation of outstanding oboists. We are committed to excellence, a supportive atmosphere and a well-rounded approach to music making that prepares students for successful 21st-century careers in music. The South Carolina oboe studio encourages creative exploration, musical and otherwise, as a path in helping each student develop their full musical potential and realize individual career goals in music.

University of South Carolina oboists enjoy many opportunities to learn, perform and excel. Private lessons emphasize fundamentals of good playing, technical development, musical phrasing, and of course, reed making! Classics of oboe study are emphasized and include the Barret, Sellner and Ferling studies in addition to the standard solo repertoire.

Ensembles include the University Orchestra as well as the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds. An active chamber music program gives students the opportunity to explore this repertoire. The Opera at USC program performs two fully staged operas each year with orchestra. In addition to private lessons, oboists meet weekly for studio class and reed class.

Research grants are available to music students through university programs. South Carolina oboists have received Magellan and Leadership Scholars grants for special projects that ranged from summer music study in France to monthly chamber music performances at Columbia's VA hospital.

Former students have been accepted for further study at top music schools, including the Eastman School of Music, the University of Southern California, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory and Indiana University, and have gone on to successful careers as performers and teachers across the country.
