Civil Engineering at South Carolina

Civil engineering is the planning, design and construction of projects that define a civilization. Civil engineers have built landmarks that now stand as tributes to the profession's creative spirit and ingenuity. From buildings and roads to water and bridges, civil engineering is everywhere.

What to Expect

During your first two years as a civil engineering major, you will take a variety of courses to develop a foundation in mathematics, computer programming, the physical sciences and basic engineering sciences as well as liberal arts courses to provide you with a well-balanced educational experience.

You will have the opportunity to go on a variety of field trips, which will enhance the in-class learning experience. Challenging coursework and attentive faculty provide you the knowledge and skills needed for successful entry to the civil engineering practice.

Undergraduate Degree

B Bachelor of Science in Engineering – Civil Engineering (B.S.E.)

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is at the forefront of education and research, expanding in areas such as design to better withstand hurricanes and earthquakes, sustainable development, intelligent transportation systems, high-performance and novel materials characterization, bioelectrical remediation, life-cycle analyses, nondestructive evaluation and cardiovascular flow. Civil engineering majors will be able to concentrate in a variety of areas including environmental, geotechnical, structures, transportation and water resources.

The following courses fulfill some of the requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a major in civil engineering:

  • Introduction to Engineering Graphics and Visualization
  • Statics
  • Computational Methods for Civil Engineering
  • Dynamics
  • Mechanics of Solids
  • Civil Engineering Materials
  • Structural Analysis I
  • Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering
  • Introduction to Transportation Engineering
  • Introduction to Environmental Engineering
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Introduction to Water Resources Management
  • Systems Applications in Civil Engineering
  • Civil Engineering Design

A Accelerated Degree Option

Civil engineering offers an accelerated degree program that allows undergraduate students to complete both bachelor's and master's degrees in as few as five years. The use of dual credit — courses that can be used toward both degrees — enables acceleration of the program, reducing the total enrollment time of the student by one semester.
