My freshman year, I spent the summer as an Americorps VISTA Summer Associate. It was here that I worked with Foodshare, a nonprofit in Columbia that tackles the issue of food insecurity in South Carolina. I was able to shadow an internal medicine doctor to promote the program, which was run by Palmetto Health Richland at the time. It was this experience that made me realize my passion for people and medicine. Although it took me a year to fully change my path, I am excited for my future in medicine and helping others through my experiences and my education. 

Future plans: Austin awaits notification from the Fulbright Commission, and after a gap year, will attend medical school.
