Smooth Sailing

When Derrick Vaz graduated in May 2020, COVID-19 put a wrench in a 5-month contract he had lined up performing with a jazz band aboard the Celebrity Reflection cruise ship. But this year cruise ships were able to sail, and Derrick shared with us his experience performing in a post-COVID environment.

Dr. Jay Jacobs has led the Mighty Sound of the Southeast since 2019. Originally from Morgantown, West Virginia, Dr. Jacobs is Associate Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at the University of South Carolina, where he is the director of The Carolina Band, conducts the Symphonic Winds and teaches courses within the School of Music.

Remembering Frankie Goodman

Frankie was a loving spirit. Faithful, kind, and selfless, she was a driving force behind the efforts to create the Center for Southern African-American Music (CSAM) in the School of Music in 2004 and served as an administrative assistant for the Center for a few years before her retirement.

Poet Nikky Finney embraces outspoken candor to inform, educate, motivate

In “At War with Ourselves: 400 Years of You,” the poet and English professor covers four centuries of American history, recounting uncomfortable truths about racism and violence. But she also sings of success and resilience. She reminds readers about African American inventors, Olympians, leaders and activists, as well as everyday heroes who live out their dreams.
