Music Industry

Music Industry Studies go well beyond classes in audio recording, although we have that too! Come and learn about the ever-changing landscape that is the music industry and gain the skills necessary to work and succeed.

The Music Industry Studies program is part of the School of Music at the University of South Carolina.  As the state's flagship institution, it is our goal to prepare students for the next phase of their lives - professional careers within the massive $72 billion (and growing!) music industry.  While classroom learning can provide vital information that can help students develop understanding and awareness on topics, there is little that can compare to hands-on learning, or experiential learning.  The MIS Program was founded on this concept; to provide our students with classroom education and real-world training that will give them the greatest chance of success in their professional lives. Whether it is being on-site with one of the largest music festivals in the United States, working in a real recording studio under a tight timeline, or promoting their own shows and events, the Music Industry eXperience (or MIX) allows our students to explore the fields they are interested in while under the guidance of experienced faculty and mentors.

Provides resources not covered by tuition and fees for students to engage in hands-on, real-world experiences to attain transferable job skills for the many jobs in the music industry. Critically needed funds allow for student travel to music festivals, conventions, and conferences, as well as enrichment activities geared toward exposure to music industry professionals. Through the MIS Enrichment Fund, donors invest in the future of students who seek to make the world a better place through music.  Click to donate.

Offers students with financial need the opportunity to experience a School of Music education that they would not otherwise be able to afford. Music Industry Studies students are musicians first, whether instrumentalists, singers, or performers of various genres, but who also view the world of music as an environment rife with possibilities of employment beyond music-making.
